At Stol Inspection Systems B.V., we receive many inquiries about metal detection, X-ray, magnets, and color sorting systems. We have collected some questions and listed them below with the answers. If you have a question that is not listed here, please feel free to let us know.
General
Why inspection equipment?
Due to an increase in industrial production processes, the risk of metal contamination has increased. These processes include cutting, grinding, mixing, and transportation. Although there are increasingly more regulations for clothing and jewelry of production workers, there is still a risk that metal objects brought into the production area by employees. Repairs and maintenance work can also be a source of product contamination. Finally, there may be contaminants in the raw materials.
Which industries does Stol Inspection Systems B.V. provide inspection systems for?
Most inspection equipment is supplied to the food industry. In addition, we have special inspection machines for the (petro)chemical, pharmaceutical, and recycling industries. We provide customized and standard systems tailored to your specific industry and application.
When is the best time to apply a metal detector?
A metal detector is a good protection against contaminated products, with sometimes disastrous consequences. A metal detector detects all metals that are electrically conductive or magnetic, including Fe (iron), Non-Ferro (aluminum, copper, lead, etc.), and all types of stainless steel (Inox). Usually, a metal detector is relatively easy to integrate into a production line, and the purchase costs are very reasonable. During the life of the metal detector, maintenance costs are extremely low, almost negligible, but periodic maintenance and control of the transport system is recommended.
When is the best time to apply a magnet?
Magnets are used to remove magnetic contaminants from a product without losing good product. This mainly concerns iron and even slightly magnetic stainless steel. Products that can be checked with magnets are unpackaged bulk goods and liquid products. These include rice, nuts, flour, grains, sugar, chocolate, plastic granules, etc. A magnet is by far the cheapest to purchase and does not use electricity, making it a sustainable investment.
When is the best time to apply an X-ray machine?
X-ray inspection machines look for density differences. This makes it possible to detect contaminants that have a higher density than the product itself, such as metal, glass, stones, bones, and certain types of plastic. Especially if the product is packaged in aluminum or if there is a risk of glass, bone, and the like, an X-ray machine is the best choice. An X-ray machine is a reasonably large investment, although Stol Inspection Systems B.V. can also supply affordable X-ray systems for small products.
When is the best time to apply a dynamic weighing system?
Dynamic checkweighers are used to weigh products during transport on a conveyor belt. This checks whether the weights match what is printed on the label. The E-label can also be used, and a packaging machine can receive a signal from the weigher to continuously fill the correct weight. All of this results in cost savings so that the weigher pays for itself.
When is the best time to apply a color sorting system?
Color sorting machines are usually quite large and designed to handle high capacities. They are mainly used in the chemical and food industries. For example, recycling companies use them extensively to sort plastic by color so that it can be recycled again.
Do Stol inspection machines comply with IFS, BRC, ISO 22000, GMP, etc.?
Our inspection machines meet the highest safety requirements. They have extremely high accuracy and various registration capabilities for evidence purposes. Below is a brief overview of the known standards/regulations: HACCP, Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points. Every food company must comply with this according to the Dutch Commodities Act. It is intended to detect hazards and take measures to prevent errors. BRC, British Retail Consortium. As the name suggests, this standard was developed by a number of well-known British supermarket chains (retailers). The original version was mainly written for inspection of production and environment. The latest version has been expanded to include food safety and quality management. IFS, International Food Standard, originally from Germany and France. Like BRC, this was set up by a group of retailers and these standards are quite similar to each other. GMP, Good Manufacturing Practice. This is one of the oldest standards. Over the years, various variants have emerged, HACCP actually originated from this. ISO 22000 is a standard for food safety management systems and is focused on all links in the food chain and their inspection. This standard emerged from ISO 9001.
Metal detection
How does a metal detector work?
A metal detector works with high-frequency electromagnetism. This is generated by a coil system consisting of a transmitter and receivers that build up a stable field. To cause a detection, the field needs to be disturbed, which can be done by a material that is electrically conductive or magnetic. Some products are themselves conductive due to salt or water, in which case the “product signal” needs to be made invisible using an advanced filter so that the detector only detects metal contaminations. The degree of accuracy depends on many factors, which would be too extensive to cover point by point. Our advisors are happy to explain this in a personal conversation tailored to your specific situation.
Is a metal detector harmful to health?
This question is often asked as the detector works with an invisible field, which may lead to concerns about radiation. The field that a metal detector generates is comparable to magnetism and has no impact on the health of humans and animals. However, certain detectors are used for products packaged in aluminum. These detectors are hardly sold anymore since they cannot detect stainless steel or do so very poorly. Even these detectors are not harmful, but the magnetic field is extremely strong, so people with, for example, a pacemaker are advised not to work with these types of detectors. Electronics and bank cards can also be damaged by the strong field. Stol inspection systems B.V. no longer supplies such detectors since the benefits do not outweigh the disadvantages. We have better alternatives for which we are happy to advise you.
Where is the best place to put the metal detector?
It is best to check the final products in the (closed) packaging. In principle, no contamination can enter the product then. In the case of very large final packaging, we advise placing a detector earlier in the line. For example, if you fill bulk bags with sugar, it is better to install a detector in the fall pipe just before the big bag. The risk of metal still getting into the product is very small, and the sensitivity of the detector is now good due to the small passage opening.
Is it useful to also place a detector at the beginning of the production process?
Yes, that is definitely useful. Detectors are often used to protect machines, such as a dough roller in pastry factories. Damage to such a roller or other machines can be quite expensive, so a detector often quickly pays for itself. There is also savings in detecting in the pre-process stage because rejecting semi-finished products is cheaper than rejecting finished products that have undergone all processing and perhaps already packaged.
Should I take a large passage opening to be prepared for the future?
No, the size of the detector passage is the most critical factor for sensitivity. Therefore, it is important to take the passage opening as small as possible to achieve the highest possible accuracy. A smaller metal detector is also cheaper, which is always pleasant.
